Soyu Matsuoka Roshi was an ordained priest in the Japanese Soto Zen school and was the first Zen teacher to introduce "living Zen" to the West. He was also the first to establish a public center for the practice of Zen meditation (zazen), the Zen Buddhist Temple of Chicago. In 1980 Matsuoka Roshi was in California and was inviated by Ryugen Sensei to teach meditation to his martial arts students. It was during this trip that Matsuoka ordained Ryugen and shaved his head.
