GAIA
Initiative
Global Awareness, Intelligence and Action
In our global society, human beings are connected with one another at an unprecedented level. At the click of a mouse, we can communicate with persons continents away, exchanging laughs and ideas. We have access to more specialized information and technology than ever before, and developing countries are steadily paving their own ways in the global stage.
Despite our increased interconnectivity and interdependence with others, there are major sociological issues that are often overlooked by developed nations. The most crucial of these issues stem from human rights violations, and include human trafficking, inequality, intolerance and torture. While many in the West think this is primarily a "third world" problem, the reality is that it is a global problem that affects all societies. In fact, human sex trafficking continues to occur in most major US cities today.
The Global Awareness, Intelligence and Action Initiative ("GAIA") is CPB's answer to the general lack of societal awareness regarding human rights violations and other major human-caused issues occurring in our world today. The point of the GAIA Initiative is simple: to point us towards issues that really deserve our attention as compassionate, concerned human beings, hopefully moving us away from our own prejudices and dogmas that only serve to "cover up" the stuff that is really worth talking about. This is pragmatism, and is the message conveyed by the Buddha in his famous "arrow metaphor."
Our aim at CPB is to first provide accurate information about some of the most frequently overlooked but most important sociological issues facing us as a global society. Many of these problems are directly and indirectly related to other major problems that plague us in the modern era, including the extreme disparities between rich and poor and the maintenance of artificial class systems based on gender, religion, ethnicity and personal lifestyles. We will use GAIA to present information about the major human rights issues presently affecting each major region of the world.
Once the information is presented, our aim is to provide credible information about what impact the given issue has on the local region, as well as the world. We will seek information from various experts who can help educate our audience on the issues at hand. Finally, CPB's GAIA Initiative will keep track of the political and sociological initiatives that aim to reduce the suffering associated with each issue, including legislation and, most importantly, groups of dedicated people who are actively working to alleviate the problems we highlight. We will provide you with options for taking action and ultimately helping to eliminate global suffering.
